Raised and trained in Melbourne, Amanda van Gils now resides in Brisbane. Best known for her contemporary ‘motion landscapes’ Amanda has an endless fascination for the mechanics and materiality of paint and how this can be used to describe and transform relatively ordinary passages of landscape.
Amanda holds a Bachelor of Fine Art from Monash University and a Post Graduate in Visual Art from the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA). Since 2000, Amanda has held over 25 solo exhibitions and exhibited in over 100 exhibitions in Australia as well as small showings in Berlin, New York and Hong Kong.
Amanda’s work has been selected as finalist in a number of national art prizes, and for inclusion included in publications such as Vogue Living, Queenslands Sunday Mail and Art/Edit magazine. Collections holding her work include: Greenslopes Private Hospital, Gold Coast University Hospital, Monash University, and numerous private collections in Australia and overseas.
In addition to her own busy practice, Amanda van Gils has demonstrated a commitment to building the careers of other Artists through a range of initiatives. These initiatives have included development of online Artist’s collective (2008 ongoing), curating two large scale exhibitions (38 artists and 55 artists respectively), facilitating six large scale art swaps and, since 2015 as Founder and Director of online gallery ART500 www.ART500.com.au
