Isla is a traditional watercolour artist who, studied art is SA with Trevor Clare & Ruth Tuck in the early 1970s and lived in the USA for three years where she continued her studies and held her first solo art show in the late 1970s, and belonged to the International Art Society.

Isla has lived in the ACT since 1979 and over this period has developed a reputation as an artist known especially for her distinctive depictions of the local scenery. She has held well over 20 solo art exhibitions in local galleries and belongs to ASOC, The Queanbeyan Art Society & AIM, (Art in Miniature group.)

She has painted many commissions including the Canberra Times building in Fyshwick, paintings for Jason Placemats, miniature models of Canberras Embassies at Cockington Green and in September 2017 a book was launched at the National Library titled National Treasures, Canberras Embassies. Written by Dorothy Hart and ART of each Embassy by Isla Patterson.

Isla has travelled widely in Australia, places such as the Kimberleys in WA and has paintings from many overseas countries such as Alaska, Botswana and the Antarctic.
