Joanna Darby – “Surrounded (study for suburban bush landscape)”

Current bid: $350.00

1 in stock

This small painting is part of an ongoing body of works exploring the Australian landscape, and themes related to the landscape. This particular study came from sketches from early morning walks with my kids in the bushland surrounding our suburb. I was reminded that even in this common and familiar setting we are surrounded by beauty, and that standing amongst gum trees of this stature and age, even here, we are surrounded by stories ancient and recent.

Responding to the natural environment, Joanna works primarily in acrylic painting and drawing, focusing on themes related to the landscape. Joanna considers her work to be an ongoing conversation with the landscape and a way of storytelling- each landscape tells stories tragic and beautiful, ancient and recent, and challenges us to reconsider our relationships with the land and with each other. Her art practice is about deep listening and hopeful being.

Joanna’s works can be found in private collections in Australia, New Zealand, Poland, Canada, USA and UK, and quite a few are at her mum’s. She is based in Newcastle NSW, and is always on the hunt for great coffee and pretty leaves.
